Each beat is a job the ad has to perform. The order is not stylistic — it is the sequence viewers will accept information in.

Opening

The hook. Wins or loses the ad in the first 1–3 seconds — one idea, one visual, one reason not to scroll.

The Opening is the only beat with no second chance. Its entire job is to buy the next three seconds, which means it must carry exactly one idea. Decoded winners overwhelmingly open on a single visual with a single line of on-screen text; the moment a second idea enters the frame, completion rate drops. Note that Opening takes the smallest share of runtime of any front-half beat — the hook is short by design, because its output is attention, not comprehension.

Methodology

How these numbers are produced

Every ad in the set is watched and segmented by hand into structural beats — not by transcript keywords, but by the job each section performs. A beat ends when the ad stops doing one thing and starts doing another, which is why two ads of identical length can have very different beat counts.

Each beat is then timed, and its share of total runtime recorded. Aggregating those shares across 142+ ads produces the cross-category baseline. Doing the same within a vertical produces that vertical's allocation, and dividing one by the other produces the Beat Efficiency Ratio.

Pattern Flow
