AI Overview & GEO Checklist for Brands: What to Do and Ignore
An operational GEO checklist for brands: eligibility, unique content, ecommerce/local feeds, measurement in Search Console, and the hacks Google says to ignore — not a ranking-magic playbook.
AI Overviews still sit on ordinary Search: crawlable pages, unique helpful content, and a site that can convert the click. This checklist is the operating sheet for brands — eligibility, content, ecommerce feeds, measurement — plus the GEO hacks we refuse to run.
GEO is SEO with a citation surface, not a new ranking engine you can hack
Google's own guidance is blunt: generative features on Search are grounded in the same ranking and quality systems, and a pile of third-party 'AEO/GEO' tricks (llms.txt as a magic file, tiny chunked pages, synonym stuffing, bought mentions) is not how the product works. For a brand, the useful job is still: be eligible to be shown, publish non-commodity pages a human would finish, keep products and local details accurate in the feeds Google already uses, and measure clicks from generative surfaces in Search Console. If a vendor sells an 'AI Overview ranking package' with a proprietary Google metric, treat it as unverified. No third-party tool sees Google's internal AI systems.
Commodity pages will not be the page an Overview wants to cite
A 2,000-word '7 tips for first-time buyers' that restates the internet is the opposite of what generative features need to ground on. Unique first-hand tests, original measurements, return-and-fit data you actually have, a founder process, a repair log, a sized fit guide — those are cite-able because they cannot be regenerated from ten other tabs. Do not manufacture 40 near-duplicate SKU blogs to 'cover fan-out queries'; scaled thin pages are a spam problem, not a GEO strategy. One strong page that answers the job, with images and video that support it, beats a folder of AI paraphrases. Paid social creative does not replace this, but the same product facts should appear on the PDP the Overview might cite and in the ad the click hits.
Measure in Search Console, then decide if content or the feed is the leak
The Generative AI performance report in Search Console is the first-party read for how people reach you through AI Overviews and related surfaces. Use it the way you use a placement report: which queries, which pages, what happened after the click. If you get impressions and no clicks, the citation may be answering the query without needing you — improve uniqueness or the snippet-worthy fact on the page. If you get clicks and no revenue, that is a PDP and offer problem, not an Overview problem. Klip Kanvas will not put you in an Overview; it will make the on-site video and UGC that sit on the page people land on. Do not confuse an ad hook-rate with a Search citation.
How to use the tables below
Work them as pass/fail gates in order, not as a content brainstorm. Eligibility first: if the URL cannot be indexed or the property is not in Search Console, stop. Then the unique-content test, then ecommerce and local feeds (Merchant Center and Business Profile beat another blog), then the weekly Search Console generative readout, then the ignore-list so nobody staffs a quarter on llms.txt or synonym clones. Values are artefacts and thresholds — verified property, non-commodity test, feed price match — not slogans about winning GEO. If a vendor's GEO score disagrees with Search Console, keep Search Console. Paid social remains a different job: ads can send the click; they cannot fake a first-hand page.
5 checklists inside: Search/AI eligibility gates, unique-content pass/fail, ecommerce and local feed rows, Search Console generative measurement, and GEO hacks to ignore — with the replacement action for each.
