Apparel & Fashion Ads Cheatsheet: Catalog, Creative and Benchmarks

Apparel-specific CPM, CTR, CPA and return bands, catalog and DPA notes, hybrid creative templates, and why AI cannot fake garment drape — film on-body, generate the opinion layer.

Apparel is the hardest vertical for AI UGC because the purchase lives in fit and drape, which generated bodies cannot fake. This sheet is the catalog setup, the hybrid templates that still convert, and the fashion-specific benchmark bands — including returns, which are the number most 'winning' CPAs hide.

AI cannot fake garment drape — plan the whole system around that

Drape is physics: gravity, fabric weight, grain, pressure points. Avatar engines move a face and a torso; they guess a plausible garment shape and lock it. Shoulder seams float, hems do not break, knits do not cling and release, silk and bias-cut advertise every error. Close-ups make it worse. There is no prompt that repairs this yet. Do not generate a model wearing your SKU and ask media to do the rest. Use the avatar off the garment — bedroom, mirror, fitting-room talk — and cut to real on-body footage or stills for every fit claim. Accessories (bags, jewellery, sunglasses) tolerate a higher avatar ratio because they do not depend on cloth hanging off a moving body. Structured denim hides sins better than satin. Hybrid B-roll is not a nice-to-have. It is the category.

Catalog and creative are the same job in fashion

If the ad SKU, colourway and price do not match the PDP and the catalog feed, you will pay for returns that look like a targeting problem. DPA and Advantage+ catalog ads need on-model images that are the real garment, not a generated try-on presented as size proof. Hero prospecting can be a 15–30s UGC review of one SKU; catalog retargeting should be the product they viewed, same colour, same fabric story. 'What I ordered vs what arrived' converts when the arrived state is the real product, same colourway, no beautifying filter that changes the drape. Virtual try-on is an editorial format, not a sizing engine — an avatar cannot be a size 8 in any way that maps to your grade.

The hybrid template that actually ships weekly

Twenty minutes on a phone: standing front, three-quarter turn, sit-down, fabric pinch, walk-away. That clip bank feeds a month of tests if you rotate the visual, not only the first line. A working 30-second cut is roughly 12 seconds of talking head and 18 seconds of on-body product — start near 40% avatar / 60% real for garments, 60/40 for accessories. Never open on a talking head with no garment in frame. Name sample size, whether it runs small, and that returns are free; that line lifts click quality even when CTR stays flat. Klip Kanvas multiplies the opinion layer — 3 hooks × 2 avatars, new first lines without restaging a studio — around footage you already have. It does not replace showing the clothes.

How to read fashion numbers (returns first)

Fashion often shows a decent hook on outfit-in-first-frame creatives and a soft hold if the garment never moves. A cheap CPA on a 40% return SKU is not a winner. Measure return rate on advertised SKUs for a full return window before you scale. CPMs in this vertical often run cheaper than supplements and skincare; that does not make the economics easier once you ship two ways. Bands below are our observed apparel accounts, cold US Meta Purchase unless labelled. Do not reuse supplement or kitchen CPMs here.

5 locked apparel tables: observed CPM/CTR/CPA/AOV/return bands, catalog and DPA rules, hybrid shot templates (drape cannot be faked), hook and fit-claim limits, and a fashion seasonality plus kill sheet.
