Creative Naming Conventions: A Schema You Can Actually Report On
A reporting-ready creative naming schema: field order, allowed values, delimiter and casing rules, worked examples, and the parsing checks that keep Ads Manager exports pivotable.
A naming convention is a reporting system that happens to live in the ad name. If you cannot reconstruct the hook, avatar, offer and ratio from a CSV row two weeks later, the test taught you that 'ad 3 won' — which is useless. This sheet locks field order, allowed values, delimiters and pivot-ready examples so every file, ad and UTM content token is the same string.
If two people would name the same ad differently, you do not have a convention
The failure mode is not ugly names — it is non-joinable names. One buyer writes Serum_HookA_Av2, another writes serum-question-maya-9x16, a third leaves Meta's default 'Ad from catalogue 14 May'. Those three rows will never group in a pivot, so you cannot tell whether the hook family or the face drove CPA. The convention has to be written down with allowed values, not remembered in Ads Manager. Encode enough to reconstruct the test cell, and not one field more: extra poetry is how Friday launches invent a seventh spelling of 'bundle'.
One string, three surfaces: file, ad name, utm_content
The same creative token must appear as the filename (minus extension), the ad name in Ads Manager or TikTok Ads Manager, and utm_content on the destination URL. When those three drift, you lose the only reason you named anything: tying a 30%+ hook file to the orders it actually influenced. Campaign and ad-set names carry job, audience and geo — they do not carry hook. If the hook lives in the campaign name, every duplicate and every Advantage+ mix will scramble it. Lock the creative token at ad level and reuse it; do not invent a parallel grammar for 'the Google sheet we actually trust'.
Parseability beats expressiveness
A name you can split on a single delimiter in a spreadsheet is worth more than a name that reads like a brief. Lowercase, hyphens between words inside a field, underscores between fields, no spaces, no personal punctuation. That shape survives CSV exports, in-app browsers and bulk uploaders. Length is a real constraint: some UTM strings truncate around 255 characters for the whole query, and some buyers still paste the full brief into the ad name. Short tokens from a closed list (hook-proof, av-a, 9x16) pivot; 120-character poems do not. If a new variant cannot be named from the allowed-value list, add the value to the list in writing before you launch, not in the file name on the fly.
How to use the tables below
The locked sheet is the schema itself: field order with required versus optional slots, the allowed-value catalogue, delimiter and casing rules, worked examples you can copy, and the breakage checks that catch a name that will not pivot. Read the field-order table first, then copy a worked example rather than inventing a seventh spelling on launch day. When you generate a 3 × 2 grid in Klip Kanvas, stamp this token onto the export and the push-to-ads name so the six cells land in reporting as six rows, not as 'video 1' through 'video 6'.
5 tables inside: field order with required vs optional slots, the allowed-value catalogue, delimiter/casing/length rules, worked examples across file name / ad name / utm_content, and the pivot-breakage checks that catch a convention that will not join.
