Looker Studio Ad Dashboard Cheatsheet
A Looker Studio cheatsheet for paid-social ads: page map, metric formulas, blend keys, date windows, filters that lie, and the scorecard a founder can read in five minutes without a 20-tile mural.
Most Looker Studio ad dashboards are murals: forty tiles, no decision. This sheet is the opposite — pages, formulas, blend keys, date windows and the filters that lie — so a Friday readout takes five minutes and still matches Ads Manager close enough to act.
A dashboard is a decision surface, not a museum of metrics
If a page cannot answer one question, it is decoration. Paid social needs four questions, four pages: Is blended money working? Which creative family should we scale, iterate, or kill? Is frequency or mix about to tax us? Did tracking break? Everything else is a drill-down, not a homepage. Founders who live in a 20-tile ‘overview’ end up managing CPM theatre. Media buyers who live only in Ads Manager never see the store. Looker Studio is the join: platform metrics to rank ads, shop/GA4 to sanity-check revenue, UTMs to attach a file token to an order. Last-click is a conservative floor, not a religion. If the join key is messy, the dashboard will be confident and wrong — which is worse than Ads Manager, because it looks official.
Blends fail on keys, not on charts
The usual crime is blending Meta spend to Shopify sales on date only. That produces a pretty MER line that cannot tell a hook from a branded search spike. The join you actually need is date + campaign token or date + utm_content, and those strings have to be the same case, the same delimiter, and present on the click URL. A second crime is mixing attribution windows in one scorecard: 7-day click next to 1-day view next to last-click store, then arguing about a 20% ‘gap’. Pick a window per tile and label it in the title. A third crime is unfiltered test spend sitting in the blended ROAS that the board reads. The locked tables name the keys, the windows, and the filters that must be on by default so the mural cannot lie by accident.
Date windows and sampling are where ‘it dipped’ is born
Compare last 7 versus prior 7, not last 7 versus last 30, unless you like seasonal mash. Exclude today if the platform is still collecting, or at least mark it incomplete. Do not rank CPA on a 48-hour Advantage+ learning reset. Do not rank hooks on 200 impressions. The dashboard should make under-sampled cells look under-sampled — grey, not red. Heat maps of 80 ads with no sample floor are how teams kill a winner that had three purchases. Build the scorecard tiles with the same floors the win/loss sheet uses, or the two artefacts will contradict each other every Friday and everyone will pick the nicer picture.
How to ship this without a BI team
Page 1 from Sheets or the native connectors if spend is modest; BigQuery later if row counts or refresh rates demand it. Start with the four pages and the formula table, not with custom viz. Stamp utm_content with the same creative token you already put on the file. When a 3×2 grid ships from Klip Kanvas, that token is the Looker join — if it is blank, you will get one row called ‘(not set)’ and a beautiful chart about nothing. The last locked table is the 5-minute Friday pass: which tiles you read, in which order, and what you are not allowed to decide from the mural.
6 tables inside: four-page map, metric formulas (MER, CPA, hook, freq), blend keys & attribution windows, default filters that prevent lies, sample-floor display rules, and the 5-minute Friday read order.
