Pet Brand Ads Cheatsheet: Hooks, Benchmarks and Shot Lists
Vertical-specific hooks, shot lists, seasonality and observed CPM, CTR, CPA and AOV bands for pet food, treats, supplements and durables — plus the claim lines that get ads rejected.
Pet ads live or die on whether the owner feels seen in the first two seconds — the animal is the star, the human is the buyer. This sheet maps hooks, shot lists, seasonal windows and observed CPM, CTR, CPA and AOV bands for food, treats, supplements and durables so you stop treating 'pets' as one category.
Pets is not one auction — food, treats, supplements and beds bid differently
A $36 bag of kibble, a $14 dental chew and a $140 orthopaedic bed share a customer, not an economics model. Food and treats convert on repeat and subscription, so you can live with a first-order CPA that looks expensive against a single bag as long as 60-day repeat covers it. Beds, crates and carriers are closer to furniture: higher AOV, slower consideration, more retargeting, and a CPA that has to clear on order one. Supplements sit in the worst of both — health-adjacent claims, mid AOV, and a buyer who will bounce if the ad sounds like a vet diagnosis. If you blend all four SKUs into one purchase campaign, the algorithm will over-serve the cheapest click and starve the SKU that actually pays the account. Split at least by consumable vs durable before you argue about creative.
The owner is the media buyer; the pet is the hook
Winning pet creative almost never opens on a human talking about ingredients. It opens on a recognisable animal behaviour — midnight scratching, bowl-sniff-and-walk-away, crate anxiety, the 6am zoomies — then names the owner’s private frustration in the owner’s words. Species, life stage and living situation are the real targeting, even when you run broad: a puppy-parent hook will not hold a 12-year-old-lab owner, and a cat litter ad that uses dog footage will get skipped as irrelevant before the caption finishes. Film or generate from the animal’s point of view first (bowl, floor, crate, sofa), then cut to the owner’s reaction. That POV swap is the pattern interrupt this vertical actually rewards, not a logo sting or an ingredient callout.
Vet-adjacent copy is the silent killer of pet accounts
Platform review does not care that your chew is 'just a treat'. Words like treat, prevent, cure, hip dysplasia, UTI, anxiety disorder, prescription and vet-recommended (when no vet is on file) push the ad into health or misleading-claim review, or get it rejected outright. The safe pattern is observable behaviour in, product action in, owner feeling out: 'he stopped begging at 2am after we switched textures', not 'clinically proven to treat separation anxiety'. Keep medical proof on the PDP for people who click through; the ad should never try to win a diagnosis. If a line would be illegal on a supplement label, it does not belong in the first three seconds of a Reels ad either.
How to use the tables — and how to produce the volume this vertical needs
The locked sheet is a lookup, not a strategy essay: subcategory economics, hook templates with hook-rate targets, a shot list you can brief or generate from, a month-by-month calendar, and a claim-swap list for review. Pet creative also dies when every ad uses the same golden retriever on a white kitchen island. Rotate species, coat colour, home type and life stage the way other brands rotate hooks. Pasting a product URL into Klip Kanvas and generating owner-style UGC variants across those axes is usually faster than waiting on one creator who owns one photogenic dog — just do not imply the avatar is a vet, and do not put a disease claim in the generated script.
5 locked tables: observed CPM/CTR/CPA/AOV bands by pet subcategory, 8 fill-in hooks with hook-rate targets, a 10-shot UGC list for food and durables, a 12-month seasonality calendar, and claim/compliance swaps that keep vet-adjacent copy off the rejection pile.
