UTM Schema Cheatsheet for Paid Social

A paid-social UTM schema: parameter-by-parameter values, dynamic macros for Meta, TikTok and YouTube, casing rules, GA4 field mapping and the QA checks that catch stripped query strings.

Without UTMs at the creative level, your store and your ad platform can both be 'right' and still be useless: you will know the channel made sales, not which video did the work. This sheet locks parameter values, dynamic macros per platform, casing rules and the GA4 mapping so a hook-rate winner can be tied to an order without a lookup table.

UTMs are a naming problem dressed up as analytics

Half of what looks like an attribution gap is paid traffic dumped into Direct because parameters were missing, mixed-case, or stripped on redirect. Source and medium identify the channel; campaign identifies the campaign you can find in Ads Manager; content is the creative token. Term is a search leftover — leave it blank until a report actually uses it. The schema only works if the creative token is the same string you already put in the filename and the ad name. If two people would tag the same ad differently, stop launching and finish the doc. Case inconsistency splits one channel into several rows, so Facebook and facebook become two sources and your blended report lies.

Dynamic macros at ad level, not a one-off paste

Manual paste into twenty destination URLs will drift the first time someone duplicates a winner. Set URL parameters on the ad object so campaign, ad set and ad name fill at click time from the thing that actually served. Never put UTMs only on a campaign default and assume every ad inherits them — check the ad. Meta, TikTok and YouTube each have their own macro grammar; map those macros onto the same five human fields rather than inventing a sixth schema per platform. If your ad names are messy, your UTMs will be messy, which is why the naming convention sheet and this sheet have to share tokens.

Presence beats reconciliation theatre

A phone click that still shows source, medium, campaign and content after every redirect is the QA. Desktop preview is not the QA. Link shorteners, geo-redirects, www-to-apex rules and in-app browsers drop query strings unless they are set to forward them. Checkout must still see the first landing — a consent wall or theme reload that kills the query is how GA4 shows the click and Shopify calls the order Direct. Do not add a fourth tracker to adjudicate Meta versus Shopify versus GA4 to the cent. UTMs make the pair possible: platform metrics to rank ads, store blended plus UTM-assisted views for sanity. Last-click is a conservative floor, not a religion.

How to use the tables below

The locked sheet is the schema you paste from for the next year: exact values per parameter, dynamic macros for Meta/TikTok/YouTube, casing and length rules, the GA4 dimension each field lands in, and the launch QA that treats a blank content parameter as a production defect. When you push a 3 × 2 grid from Klip Kanvas, confirm utm_content is mapped to the creative token on every ad — a spreadsheet of 40 variants with a blank content field is how a healthy account collects 40 unreadable rows in one afternoon.

5 tables inside: parameter-by-parameter values, dynamic macros for Meta / TikTok / YouTube, casing and length rules, GA4 and store field mapping, and the phone-click QA / breakage sheet that treats a blank content parameter as a launch blocker.
